Monkeys control a robot arm with thoughts

Monkeys Think, Moving Artificial Arm as Own

Source: NY Times, May 29, 2008

Two monkeys with tiny sensors in their brains have learned to control a mechanical arm with just their thoughts, using it to reach for and grab food and even to adjust for the size and stickiness of morsels when necessary, scientists reported on Wednesday.

Andrew Schwartz/University of Pittsburgh

A grid in the monkey’s brain carried signals from 100 neurons for the mechanical arm to grab and carry snacks to the mouth.

Cortical Control of a Prosthetic Arm for Self-Feeding

The report, released online by the journal Nature, is the most striking demonstration to date of brain-machine interface technology. Scientists expect that technology will eventually allow people with spinal cord injuries and other paralyzing conditions to gain more control over their lives.

The findings suggest that brain-controlled prosthetics, while not practical, are at least technically within reach.

In previous studies, researchers showed that humans who had been paralyzed for years could learn to control a cursor on a computer screen with their brain waves and that nonhuman primates could use their thoughts to move a mechanical arm, a robotic hand or a robot on a treadmill.

The new experiment goes a step further. In it, the monkeys’ brains seem to have adopted the mechanical appendage as their own, refining its movement as it interacted with real objects in real time. The monkeys had their own arms gently restrained while they learned to use the added one.

Experts not involved with the study said the findings were likely to accelerate interest in human testing, especially given the need to treat head and spinal injuries in veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

“This study really pulls together all the pieces from earlier work and provides a clear demonstration of what’s possible,” said Dr. William Heetderks , director of the extramural science program at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. Dr. John P. Donoghue, director of the Institute of Brain Science at Brown University, said the new report was “important because it’s the most comprehensive study showing how an animal interacts with complex objects, using only brain activity.”

The researchers, from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, used monkeys partly because of their anatomical similarities to humans and partly because they are quick learners.

In the experiment, two macaques first used a joystick to gain a feel for the arm, which had shoulder joints, an elbow and a grasping claw with two mechanical fingers.

Then, just beneath the monkeys’ skulls, the scientists implanted a grid about the size of a large freckle. It sat on the motor cortex, over a patch of cells known to signal arm and hand movements. The grid held 100 tiny electrodes, each connecting to a single neuron, its wires running out of the brain and to a computer.

The computer was programmed to analyze the collective firing of these 100 motor neurons, translate that sum into an electronic command and send it instantaneously to the arm, which was mounted flush with the left shoulder.

The scientists used the computer to help the monkeys move the arm at first, essentially teaching them with biofeedback.

After several days, the monkeys needed no help. They sat stationary in a chair, repeatedly manipulating the arm with their brain to reach out and grab grapes, marshmallows and other nuggets dangled in front of them. The snacks reached the mouths about two-thirds of the time — an impressive rate, compared with earlier work.

The monkeys learned to hold the grip open on approaching the food, close it just enough to hold the food and gradually loosen the grip when feeding.

On several occasions, a monkey kept its claw open on the way back, with the food stuck to one finger. At other times, a monkey moved the arm to lick the fingers clean or to push a bit of food into its mouth while ignoring a newly presented morsel.

The animals were apparently freelancing, discovering new uses for the arm, showing “displays of embodiment that would never be seen in a virtual environment,” the researchers wrote.

“In the real world, things don’t work as expected,” said the senior author of the paper, Dr. Andrew Schwartz, a professor of neurobiology at the University of Pittsburgh. “The marshmallow sticks to your hand or the food slips, and you can’t program a computer to anticipate all of that.

“But the monkeys’ brains adjusted. They were licking the marshmallow off the prosthetic gripper, pushing food into their mouth, as if it were their own hand.”

The co-authors were Meel Velliste, Sagi Perel, M. Chance Spalding and Andrew Whitford.

Scientists have to clear several hurdles before this technology becomes practical, experts said. Implantable electrode grids do not generally last more than a period of months, for reasons that remain unclear.

The equipment to read and transmit the signal can be cumbersome and in need of continual monitoring and recalibrating. And no one has yet demonstrated a workable wireless system that would eliminate the need for connections through the scalp.

Yet Dr. Schwartz’s team, Dr. Donoghue’s group and others are working on all of the problems, and the two macaques’ rapid learning curve in taking ownership of a foreign limb gives scientists confidence that the main obstacles are technical and, thus, negotiable.

In an editorial accompanying the Nature study, Dr. John F. Kalaska, a neuroscientist at the University of Montreal, argued that after such bugs had been worked out, scientists might even discover areas of the cortex that allow more intimate, subtle control of prosthetic devices.

Such systems, Dr. Kalaska wrote, “would allow patients with severe motor deficits to interact and communicate with the world not only by the moment-to-moment control of the motion of robotic devices, but also in a more natural and intuitive manner that reflects their overall goals, needs and preferences.”

Computer Model Reveals How Brain Represents Meaning

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2008) — Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University have taken an important step toward understanding how the human brain codes the meanings of words by creating the first computational model that can predict the unique brain activation patterns associated with names for things that you can see, hear, feel, taste or smell.

Researchers previously have shown that they can use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to detect which areas of the brain are activated when a person thinks about a specific word. A Carnegie Mellon team has taken the next step by predicting these activation patterns for concrete nouns -- things that are experienced through the senses -- for which fMRI data does not yet exist.

The work could eventually lead to the use of brain scans to identify thoughts and could have applications in the study of autism, disorders of thought such as paranoid schizophrenia, and semantic dementias such as Pick's disease.

The team, led by computer scientist Tom M. Mitchell and cognitive neuroscientist Marcel Just, constructed the computational model by using fMRI activation patterns for 60 concrete nouns and by statistically analyzing a set of texts totaling more than a trillion words, called a text corpus. The computer model combines this information about how words are used in text to predict the activation patterns for thousands of concrete nouns contained in the text corpus with accuracies significantly greater than chance.

The findings are being published in the May 30 issue of the journal Science.

"We believe we have identified a number of the basic building blocks that the brain uses to represent meaning," said Mitchell, who heads the School of Computer Science's Machine Learning Department. "Coupled with computational methods that capture the meaning of a word by how it is used in text files, these building blocks can be assembled to predict neural activation patterns for any concrete noun. And we have found that these predictions are quite accurate for words where fMRI data is available to test them."

Just, a professor of psychology who directs the Center for Cognitive Brain Imaging, said the computational model provides insight into the nature of human thought. "We are fundamentally perceivers and actors," he said. "So the brain represents the meaning of a concrete noun in areas of the brain associated with how people sense it or manipulate it. The meaning of an apple, for instance, is represented in brain areas responsible for tasting, for smelling, for chewing. An apple is what you do with it. Our work is a small but important step in breaking the brain's code."

In addition to representations in these sensory-motor areas of the brain, the Carnegie Mellon researchers found significant activation in other areas, including frontal areas associated with planning functions and long-term memory. When someone thinks of an apple, for instance, this might trigger memories of the last time the person ate an apple, or initiate thoughts about how to obtain an apple.

"This suggests a theory of meaning based on brain function," Just added.

In the study, nine subjects underwent fMRI scans while concentrating on 60 stimulus nouns -- five words in each of 12 semantic categories including animals, body parts, buildings, clothing, insects, vehicles and vegetables.

To construct their computational model, the researchers used machine learning techniques to analyze the nouns in a trillion-word text corpus that reflects typical English word usage. For each noun, they calculated how frequently it co-occurs in the text with each of 25 verbs associated with sensory-motor functions, including see, hear, listen, taste, smell, eat, push, drive and lift. Computational linguists routinely do this statistical analysis as a means of characterizing the use of words.

These 25 verbs appear to be basic building blocks the brain uses for representing meaning, Mitchell said.

By using this statistical information to analyze the fMRI activation patterns gathered for each of the 60 stimulus nouns, they were able to determine how each co-occurrence with one of the 25 verbs affected the activation of each voxel, or 3-D volume element, within the fMRI brain scans.

To predict the fMRI activation pattern for any concrete noun within the text corpus, the computational model determines the noun's co-occurrences within the text with the 25 verbs and builds an activation map based on how those co-occurrences affect each voxel.

In tests, a separate computational model was trained for each of the nine research subjects using 58 of the 60 stimulus nouns and their associated activation patterns. The model was then used to predict the activation patterns for the remaining two nouns. For the nine participants, the model had a mean accuracy of 77 percent in matching the predicted activation patterns to the ones observed in the participants' brains.

The model proved capable of predicting activation patterns even in semantic areas for which it was untrained. In tests, the model was retrained with words from all but two of the 12 semantic categories from which the 60 words were drawn, and then tested with stimulus nouns from the omitted categories. If the categories of vehicles and vegetables were omitted, for instance, the model would be tested with words such as airplane and celery. In these cases, the mean accuracy of the model's prediction dropped to 70 percent, but was still well above chance (50 percent).

Plans for future work include studying the activation patterns for adjective-noun combinations, prepositional phrases and simple sentences. The team also plans to study how the brain represents abstract nouns and concepts.

The Carnegie Mellon team included Andrew Carlson, a Ph.D. student in the Machine Learning Department; Kai-Min Chang, a Ph.D. student in the Language Technologies Institute; and Robert A. Mason, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Psychology. Others are Svetlana V. Shinkareva, now a faculty member at the University of South Carolina, and Vicente L. Malave, now a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego. The research was funded by grants from the W.M. Keck Foundation and the National Science Foundation.

William Shakespeare a woman in disguise

JERUSALEM: Shakespeare was actually a Jewish woman who had disguised to get her work published in Elizabethan London where original literature from women was not acceptable, an expert has contended.

The woman, Amelia Bassano Lanier Bassano, was of Italian descent and lived in England as a Marrano. She has been known only as the first woman to publish a book of poetry ("Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum" in 1611) and as a candidate for "the dark
lady" referred to in the sonnets, daily Ha'aretz reported.

The theory rests largely on the circumstances of Bassano's life, which John Hudson, an expert in Shakespeare, contends matches much better to the content of "Shakespeare's" work.

The researcher has also identified technical similarities between the language used in Bassano's known poetry and that used in "Shakespeare's" verse.

The conginitive scientist has located several clues in the text like recently noted Jewish allegories and the statistically significant appearance of Amelia Bassano Lanier's various names in the plays, which he says point to her as the only convincing candidate as the author of Shakespeare's work.

When asked if this is the biggest literary hoax ever pulled off or the worst example of a man stealing a woman's glory, the researcher dubbed it a "stratagem".

"I don't think this is a hoax. It is a stratagem she used to get her work published, as many other women have done, by having their work published under a man's name. In Elizabethan London, women could not write original literature at all, let alone plays, so this was her only option", Hudson said in an interview published in Ha'aretz.

"The example I use is that of the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria. In order that his name might be known, the architect Sostratus had his name carved on the stone base, then covered over with a piece of plaster with a dedication to the king. In time the plaster fell away, revealing the architect's name", Hudson said.

"Amelia's strategy was to leave behind a preposterous case for William Shakespeare, which has now fallen away, revealing the true creator who is now at last visible", the cognitive scientist added.

He is so convinced of Bassano's authorship that he formed a theater company, The Dark Lady Players, to bring out, through performance, the true meanings of the plays as, he argues, Bassano intended them.

Hudson holds numerous degrees from various prestigious academic institutions, in a range of specialties from Shakespeare and dramaturgical theory to sociology and anthropology.

He has spent most of his career as a cognitive scientist, restructuring the communications industry and inventing new industry models, exactly what he is now doing with Shakespeare.

The Peak Oil Crisis: The Case for 2008

The Peak Oil Crisis: The Case for 2008* // Last Posted 10 May 2008
* *

Written by Tom Whipple

It is conventional wisdom for most of the people following the peak oil
story that we still have a few years to go before the real troubles begin.
Some say 2011, others 2015 or later, but in general, among those calculating
the depletion vs. new supply balance most have been talking about troubles
starting in years rather than months.

Let's ponder for a second the meaning of "peak oil." Ever since the concept
was invented some 50 years ago, peak oil has meant the point in time when
world oil production increases to a level that never again will be reached.
For most of us, however, peak oil will not be a point on a government chart,
but will be the day when we drive up to a gas station and find the tanks
empty, restrictions on how much we can buy, or more likely a price that
makes us realize our lifestyles are going to change. We can no longer afford
to use our cars in the manner that we have been doing all our lives.

In recent weeks there have been developments suggesting that the troubles
associated with peak oil may be coming faster than many realize.

In recent weeks there have been developments suggesting that the troubles
associated with peak oil may be coming faster than many realize.

First, it is necessary to recall that world oil production has been
essentially flat for the last three years. We did hit a new nominal "peak" a
couple of months back, but the increased production was minor as compared to
the forces of demand building across the world. With production stagnant,
consumption in the rich countries holding about the same, and consumption in
China, India, Russia and the Middle Eastern oil producers surging higher,
something had to give. The "give" was in those places that could afford $20
a barrel oil, but could not afford it at $120 a barrel. For the last few
years, an increasing share of the oil flow going to poor countries has been
redirected to those that could pay the price. Outbidding the world's poor is
finite, however, so that at some point there simply won't be enough oil
going to poorer places for the richer ones to buy up.

Then we have the interesting news from the big producers. After ten years of
rapid post-Soviet growth, Russian oil production seems to have reached a
plateau. As Russian domestic consumption is rising rapidly, there is nowhere
for their exports to go but down – and they are.

Next the Saudis, who after spending $100 billion or so on new oil wells in
recent years, say they will soon have the capacity to produce 12.5 million
barrels a day. However, the King of Saudi Arabia announced last week that he
has decided to leave some of their oil in the ground for the grandchildren.
Somebody passed the word the Saudi production was going down to 9 million
barrels a day from 9.2 million -- so much for the hope that the Saudis were
going to keep us in our accustomed lifestyles.

Then we have Mexican production and exports dropping faster than predicted
and Venezuela doing its best to sell its oil to anyone but the U.S.

The most important factor, however, may be the Chinese who insist on growing
their economy at 10 or 11 percent a year. Chinese oil imports are up 14
percent over last year in the first quarter and by almost 25 percent in
March as domestic production stagnates and Beijing prepares for the
Olympics. Chinese imports for May are already looking to be above normal.

As could be expected, given flat or dwindling world exports, and stiff
competition for the remainder, U.S. imports of crude and petroleum products
have not been keeping up during the last few weeks and U.S. stockpiles have
been dropping more than normal for the time of year. Some say this is
because our economy is slowing and we will need less oil.

Others say ordering and refining more oil is about to pick up so that all
will be well shortly. The definitive answer to this question is not far
away, for this is the time of year when our stockpiles of crude oil,
gasoline, and distillates normally build. If the situation stabilizes and
stocks start climbing in the next few weeks, we can relax a little for
another year. This week's stockpile report shows some improvement with crude
inventories up, but gasoline and distillate inventories still falling.
Despite the weakening U.S. economy, the Department of Energy still shows
U.S. oil and gasoline consumption up by nearly one percent over last year.
Thus far in 2008 our crude imports are down 1.7 percent over last year and
our net imports of refined products are down by 5.2 percent.

If our stockpiles do not start to build more rapidly in the next month or
two, then watch out, for in recent years the U.S. has slowly moved towards a
just-in-time system for oil and products to lower inventory costs. Keep in
mind that much of our "stockpile" is trapped in pipelines, sitting in
partially-processed tanks at refineries, and aboard ships and barges where
it is no use to the consumer. It was only a couple of years ago that we were
hours away from shortages.

There are many forces at work in the world's oil markets today. How they
will all balance out over the rest of the year is impossible to tell. During
the last few months, however, developments suggesting much higher prices and
shortages have come to the fore as witnessed by the steadily increasing
prices for oil and gasoline. Unless something comes along to reverse these
forces in the next few months, we are likely to suffer very serious economic
troubles before the year is out.

Do forward it to your friends wherever you can to spread the knowledge. You
will surely be remembered for Good.

The Crude Oil Surge

In 1999, the price of oil hovered around $16 a barrel. By 2008, it had crossed the $100 a barrel mark. The reasons for the surge ranged from the relentless growth of the economies of China and India to widespread instability in oil-producing regions, including Iraq and Nigeria's delta region. Triple-digit oil prices have redrawn the economic and political map of the world, challenging some old notions of power. Oil-rich nations are enjoying historic gains and opportunities, while major importers — including China and India, home to a third of the world's population — confront rising economic and social costs.

Managing this new order is fast becoming a central problem of global politics. Countries that need oil are clawing at each other to lock up scarce supplies, and are willing to deal with any government, no matter how unsavory, to do it.

In many poor nations with oil, the proceeds are being lost to corruption, depriving these countries of their best hope for development. And oil is fueling gargantuan investment funds run by foreign governments, which some in the West see as a new threat.

Countries like Russia, Venezuela and Iran are flush with rising oil revenues, a change reflected in newly aggressive foreign policies. But some unexpected countries are reaping benefits, as well as costs, from higher prices. Consider Germany. Although it imports virtually all its oil, it has prospered from extensive trade with a booming Russia and the Middle East. German exports to Russia grew 128 percent from 2001 to 2006.

In the United States, as already high gas prices rose even higher in the spring of 2008, the issue cropped up in the presidential campaign, with Senators John McCain and Hillary Clinton calling for a federal gas tax holiday during the peak summer driving months. And driving habits began to change, as sales of small cars jumped and mass transit systems across the country reported a sharp increase in riders. — May 13, 2008

How the brain detects the emotions of others

What is Occam's Razor?

Occam's (or Ockham's) razor is a principle attributed to the 14th century logician and Franciscan friar; William of Occam. Ockham was the village in the English county of Surrey where he was born.

The principle states that "Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily." Sometimes it is quoted in one of its original Latin forms to give it an air of authenticity.

"Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate"
"Frustra fit per plura quod potest fieri per pauciora"
"Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem"

In fact, only the first two of these forms appear in his surviving works and the third was written by a later scholar. William used the principle to justify many conclusions including the statement that "God's existence cannot be deduced by reason alone." That one didn't make him very popular with the Pope.

Many scientists have adopted or reinvented Occam's Razor as in Leibniz's "identity of observables" and Isaac Newton stated the rule: "We are to admit no more causes of natural things than such as are both true and sufficient to explain their appearances."

The most useful statement of the principle for scientists is,

"when you have two competing theories which make exactly the same predictions, the one that is simpler is the better."

In physics we use the razor to cut away metaphysical concepts. The canonical example is Einstein's theory of special relativity compared with Lorentz's theory that ruler's contract and clocks slow down when in motion through the Ether. Einstein's equations for transforming space-time are the same as Lorentz's equations for transforming rulers and clocks, but Einstein and Poincaré recognised that the Ether could not be detected according to the equations of Lorentz and Maxwell. By Occam's razor it had to be eliminated.

The principle has also been used to justify uncertainty in quantum mechanics. Heisenberg deduced his uncertainty principle from the quantum nature of light and the effect of measurement.

Stephen Hawking explains in A Brief History of Time:
"We could still imagine that there is a set of laws that determines events completely for some supernatural being, who could observe the present state of the universe without disturbing it. However, such models of the universe are not of much interest to us mortals. It seems better to employ the principle known as Occam's razor and cut out all the features of the theory that cannot be observed."

But uncertainty and the non-existence of the ether cannot be deduced from Occam's Razor alone. It can separate two theories that make the same predictions, but does not rule out other theories that might make a different prediction. Empirical evidence is also required and Occam himself argued for empiricism, not against it.

Ernst Mach advocated a version of Occam's razor which he called the Principle of Economy, stating that "Scientists must use the simplest means of arriving at their results and exclude everything not perceived by the senses." Taken to its logical conclusion this philosophy becomes positivism; the belief that there is no difference between something that exists but is not observable and something that doesn't exist at all. Mach influenced Einstein when he argued that space and time are not absolute but he also applied positivism to molecules. Mach and his followers claimed that molecules were metaphysical because they were too small to detect directly. This was despite the success the molecular theory had in explaining chemical reactions and thermodynamics. It is ironic that while applying the principle of economy to throw out the concept of the ether and an absolute rest frame, Einstein published almost simultaneously a paper on brownian motion which confirmed the reality of molecules and thus dealt a blow against the use of positivism. The moral of this story is that Occam's razor should not be wielded blindly. As Einstein put it in his Autobiographical notes:

"This is an interesting example of the fact that even scholars of audacious spirit and fine instinct can be obstructed in the interpretation of facts by philosophical prejudices."

Occam's razor is often cited in stronger forms than Occam intended, as in the following statements. . .

"If you have two theories which both explain the observed facts then you should use the simplest until more evidence comes along"

"The simplest explanation for some phenomenon is more likely to be accurate than more complicated explanations."

"If you have two equally likely solutions to a problem, pick the simplest."

"The explanation requiring the fewest assumptions is most likely to be correct."

. . .or in the only form that takes its own advice. . .
"Keep things simple!"

Notice how the principle has strengthened in these forms which should be more correctly called the law of parsimony, or the rule of simplicity. To begin with, we used Occam's razor to separate theories that would predict the same result for all experiments. Now we are trying to choose between theories that make different predictions. This is not what Occam intended. Should we not test those predictions instead? Obviously we should eventually, but suppose we are at an early stage and are not yet ready to do the experiments. We are just looking for guidance in developing a theory.

This principle goes back at least as far as Aristotle who wrote "Nature operates in the shortest way possible." Aristotle went too far in believing that experiment and observation were unnecessary. The principle of simplicity works as a heuristic rule-of-thumb but some people quote it as if it is an axiom of physics. It is not. It can work well in philosophy or particle physics, but less often so in cosmology or psychology, where things usually turn out to be more complicated than you ever expected. Perhaps a quote from Shakespeare would be more appropriate than Occam's razor: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.".

Simplicity is subjective and the universe does not always have the same ideas about simplicity as we do. Successful theorists often speak of symmetry and beauty as well as simplicity. In 1939 Paul Dirac wrote,

"The research worker, in his effort to express the fundamental laws of Nature in mathematical form should strive mainly for mathematical beauty. It often happens that the requirements of simplicity and beauty are the same, but where they clash the latter must take precedence."

The law of parsimony is no substitute for insight, logic and the scientific method. It should never be relied upon to make or defend a conclusion. As arbiters of correctness only logical consistency and empirical evidence are absolute. Dirac was very successful with his method. He constructed the relativistic field equation for the electron and used it to predict the positron. But he was not suggesting that physics should be based on mathematical beauty alone. He fully appreciated the need for experimental verification.

The final word is of unknown origin, although it's often attributed to Einstein, himself a master of the quotable one liner:

"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."

The pithiness of this quote disguises the fact that no one knows whether Einstein said it or not (this version comes from the Reader's Digest, 1977 [US: July, UK: October?). It may well be a precis of the last few pages of his "The Meaning of Relativity" (5th edition), where he wrote about his unified field theory, saying "In my opinion the theory here is the logically simplest relativistic field theory that is at all possible. But this does not mean that nature might not obey a more complex theory. More complex theories have frequently been proposed. . . In my view, such more complicated systems and their combinations should be considered only if there exist physical-empirical reasons to do so."

Breast-feeding raises children's IQs, study says

Breast-feeding raises children's IQs, study says

Children whose mothers took part in a program that encouraged the practice had higher verbal scores than children in a control group, a large study finds.
By Denise Gellene, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
May 6, 2008
Increased breast-feeding during the first months of life appears to raise a child's verbal IQ, according to a study of nearly 14,000 children that was released Monday.

The study in Archives of General Psychiatry found that 6-year-olds whose mothers were part of a program that encouraged them to breast-feed had verbal IQs that were an average of 7.5 points higher than those of children in a control group.

The researchers said that their findings suggested that the longer an infant is exclusively fed breast milk, the greater the IQ improvement.

The results echo smaller previous studies that found children and adults who were breast-fed tended to have higher IQs than whose who were not.

Lead author Dr. Michael Kramer, a professor of pediatrics at McGill University in Montreal, said the IQ improvements were modest and might not be noticeable on an individual basis. But he added that the increase could have a significant effect on society.

"We're not talking about making a child who has trouble in school and is dropping out into a genius," he said. "But if we can increase IQ by 3 to 4 points in the whole population, we can have fewer children at the low end and more Einsteins at the high end."

The latest study tracked breast-fed infants born between June 1996 and December 1997 in Belarus. Half of the infants and mothers were assigned to an experimental program designed to promote breast-feeding, while the remaining infants and mothers received regular pediatric and follow-up medical care.

The breast-feeding program included increased counseling and instruction when women visited doctors or clinics.

At the end of three months, 72% of infants in the experimental group were still breast-feeding to some degree, compared with 60% in the group that did not receive breast-feeding support.

The researchers believe that what drove the results was the substantially higher number of infants who were exclusively breast-fed in the experimental group: 43% compared with 6% of infants in the control group.

All children in the study were interviewed and examined between 2002 and 2005, when they were an average of 6 1/2 years old. The children's academic performance also was evaluated by their teachers.

Besides the improvement in their verbal IQ scores, children in the experimental group scored an average of 4.9 points higher on tests that specifically measured vocabulary.

Compared with children in the control group, children in the experimental group had overall IQ scores 5.9 points higher than those of children in the control group and better academic assessments from their teachers, but the improvements were not deemed statistically significant.

Kramer said that more research was needed to determine whether the benefits were related to a component of breast milk or to the physical and social interaction between mother and child that is inherent in breast-feeding.

The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that infants receive only breast milk during the first six months of life. Children who are breast-fed are believed to have health advantages, including fewer gastrointestinal problems.

Last week, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that breast-feeding in the U.S. was at an all-time high, with 77% of new mothers saying they breast-fed their children compared with 60% in 1993-1994.

Google Makes $500 WiMax Bet

Google Makes $500 WiMax Bet
By Clint Boulton

The search giant looks to Clearwire to help build out its search, ad and Android platforms in an increasingly wireless world.

Analysts are bullish on Google's $500 million investment in and agreement to become a key search, ad and applications provider for both Sprint and Clearwire, which opened a new beachhead May 7 on the elusive island of speedy Internet known as WiMax.

WiMax, which pipes data at up to 70M bps to an area that covers up to 30 miles, has been praised as a technology but has struggled to find widespread traction. Clearwire, with backing of Sprint Nextel, Google and others, plans to change that.

Google will become the default search provider and preferred application provider for Clearwire's new retail product and the default provider of Web and local search for mobile phones from Sprint, which will preload Google Maps for Mobile, Gmail and YouTube.

Moreover, Google's Android mobile operating system could get a bump from the deal, with Clearwire offering Android on its voice and data devices down the road.

The possible Android tie suggests that Google may finally have a fine launching point for its mobile operating system, which has weathered criticism and doubt by skeptics who argued that the world doesn't need another mobile platform, even if it is open source. Yet analysts have said the search, ad and application ties are what make this deal hum for Google.

"Google's interest is much more about being the primary search (and, likely, advertising) provider on this network. Android will only make up a small portion of the devices on the network," Forrester Research analyst Charles Golvin told eWEEK.

Google in the WiMax driver's seat

IDC analyst Caroline Dangson wrote in a May 9 research note that the pact puts Google in a position to own the majority of Internet searches from WiMax-enabled mobile devices in the United States.

Consider that one third of U.S. Internet users are already using their mobile phones to access the Internet, with a quarter of these users conducting Internet searches through Yahoo, Google, MSN or another search engine.

While Google.com reigns in desktop search, the company is second to Yahoo in mobile search, with 25 percent of U.S. mobile Internet users accessing Google versus 29 percent accessing Yahoo, according to IDC.

"The WiMax deal could change this by 2010 when the Clearwire WiMax network is expected to cover 120 million to 140 million people in the United States," Dangson wrote. Moreover, with Internet search advertising accounting for 98 percent or so of Google's sales, Google will gain access to millions of mobile WiMax users as the default search engine for Clearwire.

This will lead to millions in mobile Internet advertising dollars, which IDC estimated was $50 million in 2007 and should grow to more than $500 million in 2011, she wrote.

Pair these stats with Google's existing paid search links and new mobile brand display ads and Google should see the return of the $500 million it invested in the Sprint-Clearwire WiMax deal within the next five years, Dangson said.

Perhaps, but Google is also banking on Clearwire, which, although it has the complete backing of Sprint Nextel, will have its hands full in a wireless market that includes Verizon, AT&T and other service providers. Google's investment, along with capital from Intel, Time Warner Cable and others, will aid but not guarantee success.

India Troubled by Chinese Submarine Reports

India Troubled by Chinese Submarine Reports
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com International Editor
May 06, 2008

(CNSNews.com) - Revelations of advances in China's nuclear-powered submarine capabilities and naval expansion are having an impact in India, whose own plans for nuclear submarines have undergone lengthy delays.

New satellite images released by the Jane's group of defense publications late last week indicate that the Chinese are building a major strategic naval base on Hainan island, south of the mainland.

Jane's reported that commercially available satellite imagery from the DigitalGlobe Corp. confirmed reports circulating since 2002 about the existence of an underground submarine base. It said 11 tunnel openings were visible at the base near Sanya, on the island's southern tip.

Also visible at the port was China's new Type 094 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), known by NATO as the Jin-class.

According to SinoDefence.com, an independent information source based in Britain, the Jin-class has 12 missile silos and will be equipped with Julang-2 submarine-launched ballistic missiles with a reported maximum range of almost 5,000 miles.

Unlike conventional (diesel-electric) submarines, nuclear-powered submarines have the ability to remain submerged for long periods of time.

Jane's noted the Sanya base's proximity both to the Taiwan Strait and to major shipping routes to the south, including the Malacca Strait.

Around one-third of the world's sea-borne trade and half of its oil supply are carried each year through the narrow waterway, which runs between Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

With its fast-growing economy dependent on energy imports, China has in recent years explored various options to expand and secure supplies, including energy deals with Central Asian republics, proposals for pipelines, and the financing of a deep-water a href=""port in Pakistan, near the entrance to the Persian Gulf.

But the vulnerability of the Malacca Strait remains of key concern: Eighty percent of China's oil supplies presently move through the channel before traversing the South China Sea to mainland ports.

According to Jane's, Beijing's concerns about defending its access to the vital sea lanes are a key factor driving its development of power-projection naval forces in the region.

In his evaluation of the satellite images, retired Indian Navy Vice-Admiral Arun Kumar Singh also noted the presence at the Sanya base of two jetties long enough to accommodate two 80,000 ton aircraft carriers or large amphibious ships.

China does not currently have aircraft carriers although there have been persistent reports since the mid-1980s about plans to acquire them (Beijing is notoriously secretive about its military buildup; the U.S. and some of its allies have for years been pressing the Chinese for greater transparency.)

In its annual report to Congress on China's military power, the Pentagon last year noted that at China's major air show in Zhuhai, Guangdong province in 2006, Chinese "military and civilian officials asserted China's interest in building an aircraft carrier."

The Pentagon report said China has about 58 attack submarines. Most are conventional but China is also building and testing Type 094 Jin-class SSBNs and Type 093 Shang-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs), it said.

Any developments in China's naval capability are closely watched in India, which boasts what is considered to be the world's fifth largest navy -- including a flagship carrier -- and has significant security interests in the Indian Ocean.

The Times of India said the extent of the Chinese progress as revealed in the satellite images "has jolted the Indian defense establishment."

Indian Navy Chief, Admiral Sureesh Mehta, voiced concern about the latest reports, but said it was not the location of the base -- of which the Indian Navy was already aware -- as much as the number of submarines being built that was a worry.

"It is not the nuclear submarine bases that matter," he told reporters. "We are concerned over the number of nuclear submarines that are being built in our neighborhood."

Mehta said it was immaterial where the submarines were based, because "nuclear submarines have long legs and can operate over long distances."

The 2007 Pentagon report did not say how many SSBNs China is believed to have in operation or under construction, although the Office of Naval Intelligence in late 2006 said China would "probably" aim to build five Jin-class submarines in order to have "a near-continuous at-sea SSBN presence."

India has for years been pursuing indigenous nuclear-powered submarine capability, under what is known as the ATV (advanced technology vessel) project.

Mehta this week declined to talk about the sensitive project, although last January Indian media reported that the first ATV could be in the water in two years' time. Military analysts then speculated that concerns about the Chinese buildup may have accelerated the program.

If successful, India would become the sixth country -- after the U.S., Russia, Britain, France and China -- with a sea borne nuclear deterrent, the third leg of its long-planned "triad" of ground-based, sea-based and air-deliverable nuclear weapons.

Singh, the retired vice-admiral, said in an op-ed Tuesday that India was about 10 years behind China when it came to developing SSBNs and tactical nuclear powered submarines, and argued that "drastic measures" needed to be taken to reduce the strategic gap.

The U.S. and Indian navies have since 1992 carried out annual joint exercises codenamed Malabar. Last year, the exercise was expanded to include warships from Australia, Japan and Singapore, and focused on waters at the entrance to the Malacca Strait.

* The new revelations about the base on the southern tip of Hainan island recall an incident there in 2001, when a U.S. Navy EP-3 spy plane on what U.S. Pacific Command called a "routine surveillance mission" was involved in a mid-air collision with one of two Chinese F-8 fighter jets which were deployed to intercept the slow-moving aircraft. The Chinese pilot was killed.

Following the collision, the EP-3 issued a mayday warning and made an emergency landing at a military airfield on Hainan. The 24-person crew had held there for 11 days before being permitted to leave, although China only allowed the plane to be dismantled and airlifted home months later. The diplomatic row took relations to a low point.

Does China pose a threat to global security?

China has secretly built a major underground nuclear submarine base that could threaten Asian countries and challenge American power in the region, new satellite imagery has revealed.

The entrance to a tunnel built into the hillside
The entrance to a tunnel built into the hillside

The pictures show that China has built a substantial harbour which could house nuclear ballistic missile submarines and aircraft carriers.

Recent protests against the Beijing Olympic Games have drawn attention to the country's controversial record in the disputed province of Tibet. China also has a tense relationship with Taiwan.

China has argued that it has a right to protect itself and that it has no hostile intentions.

Should we trust China? Does the world’s most populous nation present a threat to the rest of the world? Or is it reasonable for a rising superpower to arm itself with nuclear weapons?

Chinese nuclear submarines prompt 'new Cold War' warning

Tensions in the Far East could reach "Cold War levels" defence analysts warned, following evidence that China had secretly developed a major nuclear submarine base.

China is seeking to extend its influence

Satellite photographs passed to The Daily Telegraph this week showed that the secret base at Sanya on Hainan island will house up to 20 of the latest 094 Jin-class nuclear ballistic submarines that could be capable of firing anti-satellite missiles and nuclear-tipped cruise missiles.

The construction showed that China was “ramping up its operational capability” and developing a “blue water navy” that would challenge the dominance of the US in the Pacific, said Alex Neill, head of the Asia Security Programme at the Royal United Services Institute.

In the last 20 years China had gone from a coastal force to a navy capable of “exerting its influence far afield,” a senior Royal Navy officer said.

“It is clearly looking at a wider area of operations in the Far East but it also does not like the US placing their carrier battle groups in the area. In due course this could lead to Cold War levels of stand off,” the officer said.

There are also concerns that Beijing has secretly developed a broad military strategy - including internet assaults and satellite strikes - that could allow it to take Taiwan with the US unable to respond.

While talks continue for a peaceful settlement the island has long been in Beijing’s sights since it broke from the mainland in 1949.

Kerry Brown, the China expert at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, warned of “hawkish” elements in the two million strong People’s Liberation Army (PLA) who were “very focused” on Taiwan.

”The main source of friction is Taiwan and you cannot rule out a nationalistic military faction coming to power to taking a punt to have a quick go.”

Chinese defence expenditure is estimated by the Pentagon to be $50 billion (£25 billion) but analysts believe large chunks of the budget are “squirreled away” and it could be as high as $200 billion making it the second largest in the world after America.

The PLA is developing a strategy called the “sea denial campaign” which would prevent America intervening in any conflict with Taiwan, Mr Brown said.

It entails asymmetric conflict in which China would use cyber warfare and laser energy to wipe out communications. Anti-satellite missiles, potentially launched from submarines, would ensure that America was “blind” over the Far East. The Chinese have already proven that they have these capabilities as well as using espionage to remove military technology from the US.

”This is what they call pressure point warfare in which they remove any US response in one fell swoop,” Mr Brown said. “China wishes to power project well into the Pacific and challenge the dominance of the US Pacific Command.”

He also said that the Sanya base gave China reach into the Indian Ocean.

Much to America’s disgust, China’s missile accuracy has been improved from 5km down to 1km. China’s own space programme - that some experts believe equals Cape Canaveral in size - is also expanding close to the navy base on Hainan island.

There was no one available at the Chinese Embassy in London to comment.

This Mind is Buddha

Daibai asked Baso: `What is Buddha?'
Baso said: `This mind is Buddha.'

Mumon's Comment: If anyone wholly understands this, he is wearing Buddha's clothing, he is eating Buddha's food, he is speaking Buddha's words, he is behaving as Buddha, he is Buddha.

This anecdote, however, has given many pupil the sickness of formality. If one truly understands, he will wash out his mouth for three days after saying the word Buddha, and he will close his ears and flee after hearing `This mind is Buddha.'

Under blue sky, in bright sunlight,
One need not search around.
Asking what Buddha is
Is like hiding loot in one's pocket and declaring oneself innocent

Live Without Fear

“Put everything at stake.
Risk everything, because the next moment is not certain,
so why bother?
Why be concerned?

Live dangerously, live joyously.
Live without fear, live without guilt.
Live without any fear of hell, or any greed for heaven.

Just live.”

Relaxation

So the first thing. Relax in the chair, have the light dark or dim as you like, but the light should not be bright. Tell everybody for these twenty minutes no disturbance, no phone call, nothing whatsoever... as if the world is no more for those twenty minutes. Close the doors, relax in the chair with loose clothes so there is no tightness anywhere, and start feeling where the tension is. You will find many spots of tension. Those have to be relaxed first, because if the body is not relaxed, the mind cannot be either. The body creates the situation for the mind to relax. The body becomes the vehicle of relaxation.

When you want to be angry, or when you are angry, if the body does not collaborate with you, you will not be able to be angry. A subtle mechanism follows, certain poisons are released into the blood: your face becomes red, your eyes become red, your hands want to beat or to kill or to hit. You want to shout or shriek, and the whole body is ready. Sometimes try -- without any bodily symptom of anger, try to be angry, and you will feel that it is impossible. Unless the body gives a base, nothing is possible. So the first thing is to create a body base.

So just go on touching the place. Wherever you feel some tension, touch your own body with deep love, with compassion. The body is your servant, and you have not paid anything for it -- it is simply a gift. And so Complicated, so tremendously complex that science has not been able yet to make anything like the body. But we never think about that; we don't love the body. On the contrary; we feel angry about it. And so-called saints have taught many foolish things to people -- that the body is the enemy, that the body is your degradation. that the body is pulling you downwards, that the body is the sin; it is all sin.

If you want to commit a sin, the body helps, that's true. But the responsibility is yours, not the body's. If you want to meditate, the body is ready to help you for that too.....

Sannyas - A Message of Love, A Gift from God

SANNYAS IS A LOVE AFFAIR – it is not religious in the ordinary sense. It is far more poetic, far more lyrical, far more musical. It is more of an art than the so-called religions. It is not like Christianity, Hinduism, Mohammedanism. It is a totally new phenomenon, it is a new beginning. It has no tradition, it has no past. It is a new dawn. And my message is of LOVE.

Jesus says that God is love and I say that love is God. That's where we agree and that's where we differ too. My sannyasins love to become love songs, they have to become lovebirds!

If you start being a song, a dance, only then will you know the alchemy of sannyas, how it transforms you – how easily, without any fuss, it brings purity to you, innocence to you. You become a saint, a sage, but without any fuss. YOU DON'T BECOME A PIOUS EGOIST, you don't start proclaiming "I am holier than others." You don't know anything about holiness. All that you know is that you love life and that you love life wholly, totally.

That is REAL WORSHIP and REAL PRAYER – to love life totally, unconditionally, to enjoy each moment as a gift of God, with gratitude, with thankfulness.

OSHO
If You Choose To Be With Me, You Must Risk Finding Yourself
Ch #7: Music

OSHO Courage

THE MOMENT YOU TAKE SANNYAS YOU ARE PART OF ME – YOU ARE LOST.

YOU WILL BE KNOWN BY ME, YOU WILL NOT BE KNOWN BY YOURSELF. That is courage.

By taking sannyas you are simply merging into a totally different kind of existence – because you are merging into me. Sannyas is your death and rebirth – death as an ego, and rebirth as a consciousness.

But if the small river thinks, “I am not ready to lose myself in the Ganges,” then the river will be lost in a desert – and that will be suicide. With the Ganges it is not suicide. With the Ganges, the river becomes the Ganges. It is only a question of how you look at it. If you look positively, the river becomes bigger. It is no longer small, no longer confined to its own small banks. Now the Ganges is what she is, now the Ganges' being is her being. That is another way of looking at it – and that should be the attitude.

WHEN YOU JOIN ME AS A SANNYASIN, YOU ARE DROPPING YOURSELF, DISAPPEARING. WHEN YOU JOIN THE COMMUNE THEN YOU HAVE TO UTTERLY EFFACE YOURSELF. If a little bit is hanging there, then you will be a trouble to yourself and to the commune too – and you will not be benefitted by me.

This is happening, and this is going to happen more and more. Be prepared for it.

Mind

You have lived in a certain way up to now - don't you want to live in a different way? You have thought in a certain way up to now - don't you want some new glimpses in your being? Then be alert and don't listen to the mind.

Mind is your past constantly trying to control your present and your future. It is the dead past which goes on controlling the alive present. Just become alert about it.

But what is the way? How does the mind go on doing it? The mind does it with this method: it says, "If you don't listen to me, you will not be as efficient as I am." If you do an old thing you can be more efficient because you have done it before. If you do a new thing you cannot be efficient. The mind goes on talking like an economist, an efficiency expert; it goes on saying, "This is easier to do. Why do it the hard way? This is the way of least resistance."

Remember, whenever you have two things, two alternatives, choose the new one. Choose the harder, choose the one in which more awareness will be needed. At the cost of efficiency always choose awareness, and you will create the situation in which meditation will become possible. These are all just situations. Meditation will happen - I am not saying that just by doing them you will get to meditation, but they will be helpful. They will create the necessary situation in you, without which meditation cannot happen. Be less efficient but more creative. Let that be the motive. Don't be bothered too much about utilitarian ends. Rather, constantly remember that you are not here in life to become a commodity. You are not here to become a utility, that is below dignity. Your are not here just to become more and more efficient. You are here to become more and more alive; you are here to become more and more intelligent; you are here to become more and more happy, ecstatically happy. But that is totally different from the ways of the mind.

Whenever we are faced with a problem, we naturally begin to worry. This worry makes us have a lot of waste thoughts. We don't find the solution, yet we can't stop worrying. A worried mind filled with waste thoughts cannot find the right solution. The only way to find the right solution is to keep the mind free from worry. For this we need to first have the faith that there is a solution and we will find it. When we thus keep our mind free, our intuition works well and we are automatically able to take the right decision.

Purpose of Life

Life is purposeless. Don't be shocked.

The whole idea of purpose is wrong - it comes out of greed. Life is a sheer joy, a playfulness, a fun, a laughter, to no purpose at all. Life is its own end, it has no other end.

The moment you understand it you have understood what meditation is all about. It is living your life joyously, playfully, totally, and with no purpose at the end, with no purpose in view, no purpose there at all. Just like small children playing on the sea beach, collecting seashells and colored stones - for what purpose? There is no purpose at all.

- Osho

Drop the Fear

"Drop the fear. Fear was taken up by you in your childhood, unconsciously. Now consciously drop it and be mature. Then the life can be a light which goes on deepening as you go on growing"

"A man who is afraid of death will be afraid of life also, because life brings death. If you are afraid of the enemy and you close your door, the friend will also be prohibited"

- Osho

The Secret is in the Silence

The Secret is in the Silence So if you can feel in my words the sound of silence, my purpose is fulfilled. Because my words are not being used in the same way they have been used by everybody. I am using words just as instruments of music. I am not a musician, but I can create the same situation with words and the silences in between.

THOSE WHO CLING TO MY WORDS, MISS ME. Because they start interpreting. They start finding contradictions, they start an agreement or disagreement, but certainly a process of judgment starts in their being. That was not my purpose. My purpose was to start a silence, a music, a fragrance in you.

You have to change the gestalt. From words - which is the ordinary way humanity has used words forever, and nobody has insisted on changing the gestalt - LISTEN TO THE SILENCES. READ BETWEEN THE LINES and you will find a tremendous explosion of silence, music, celebration. And flowers go on growing in your being.

Anand Premartha, your question is, "The other night you were like a master musician, playing a beautiful melody on the strings of my heart." I am doing that every morning, every evening - for thirty-five years. But the other night was special for you. I am a very stubborn person; I will go on hitting on your head till you get the point. Last night you got it - now don't lose it. Because these are such subtle experiences, you can get them and you can lose them. ONCE YOU HAVE GOT ANY INSIGHT, REMEMBER NOT TO LOSE IT.

Yes, whatever I am doing is closer to music than anything. It is not philosophy, it is not religion, it is not theology. WHAT I AM SAYING IS NOT IN MY STATEMENTS BUT JUST IN THOSE SMALL SPACES WHICH REMAIN UTTERLY SILENT, EMPTY. But they are neither empty nor silent.

Once you have stumbled on those small pieces of silence and emptiness, you will be surprised that the silence is not silence; it is full of music, it is alive, it is a dance. And the emptiness is not emptiness; it is the only fullness that exists in the universe.

So there are two ways of listening: one is jumping from one word to another word and another is jumping from one silence to another silence. Those who are following the second way will be immensely rewarded by existence with great blissfulness, with tremendous ecstasy and with an immortality, an eternity. The treasures are incalculable. But if you are listening only to the words, you will end up at the most in a certain system of thought. This makes me sad, because I AM NOT HERE TO CREATE SYSTEMS OF THOUGHT. Millions of people have done that and distracted people from their inwardness.

All thought systems exist in the mind, and all silences exist beyond the mind. My simple message to you is to transcend the mind, transcend the word.

The Compassion of Masters

I HAVE HEARD about a very great Zen Master who had become very old and almost blind at the age of 96... and he was no longer able to teach or work about the monastery. YAMAMOTO was his name.

The old man then decided it was time to die because he was of no use to anybody; he could not be of any help. So he stopped eating.

When asked by his monks why he refused his food, he replied that he had outlived his usefulness and was only a bother to everybody.

They told him, 'If you die now" – it was January – "when it is so cold, everybody will be uncomfortable at your funeral and you will be an even greater nuisance... so please eat!' This can happen only in a Zen monastery, because DISCIPLES LOVE THE MASTER SO DEEPLY – THEIR RESPECT IS SO DEEP THAT THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANY FORMALITY.

Just see what they are saying: they are saying, 'If you die now and it is January... See, it is so cold, everybody will be uncomfortable at the funeral and you will be an even greater nuisance... so please eat!' He thereupon resumed eating. But when it became warm again, he stopped... and not long after... quietly toppled over and died.

Such compassion! One lives then for compassion... one dies then for compassion. One is even ready to choose a right time to die... so that nobody is bothered and one need not be a nuisance.

I have heard about another Zen Master who was going to die. And he said, 'Where are my shoes? Bring them!'

Somebody asked, 'Where are you going? Because the doctors say you are going to die.'

He said, 'I'm going to the cemetery...'

'But why?'

He said, 'I don't want to trouble anybody. Otherwise, you will have to carry me on your shoulders.' And he walked to the cemetery and died there!

Tremendous compassion! What manner of man... not to give even that much trouble to anybody! AND THESE PEOPLE HELPED THOUSANDS! AND THOUSANDS WERE GRATEFUL TO THEM. THOUSANDS BECAME FULL OF LIGHT AND LOVE BECAUSE OF THEM. Yet they would not like to bother anybody.

Alone or Lonely?

When you are alone you are not alone, you are simply lonely - and there is a tremendous difference between loneliness and aloneness. When you are lonely you are thinking of the other, you are missing the other. Loneliness is a negative state. You are feeling that it would have been better if the other were there - your friend, your wife, your mother, your beloved, your husband. It would have been good if the other were there, but the other is not. Loneliness is absence of the other. Aloneness is the presence of oneself. Aloneness is very positive. It is a presence, overflowing presence. You are so full of presence that you can fill the whole universe with your presence and there is no need for anybody.

Meaning of Life

Life in itself has no meaning. Life is an opportunity to create meaning. Meaning has not to be discovered; it has to be created. You will find meaning only if you create it. It is not lying there somewhere behind the bushes, so you can go and you search a little bit and find it. It is not there like a rock that you will find. It is a poetry to be composed, it is a song to be sung, it is a dance to be danced.

Last question..Bhagwan
I feel soft when you use the word F***
What to do?

It is one of the most beautiful words
English language should be proud of it
I don't think any other language has any such beautiful words
One Tom from California has done a great research on it
I think he must be the famous Tom, Tom Dick Harry fame
He says "One of the most interesting words in the English language today is the word 'F***', it is one magical word, just by it's sound, it can describe pain, pleasure, hate and love."

In language, it falls into many gramatical catagories. It can be used as a verb, both transitive (John f***ed Marry) and intransitive (Marry was f***ed by John). And as a noun (Marry is a fine f***), it can be used as an adjective (Marry is f***ing beautiful).
As you can see there are not many versitality of 'F***'. Besides the sexual meaning there are also the following uses:
Fraud- I got f***ed at the Used Cars lot
Ignorance- F***, if i know
Trouble- I guess i am f***ed now
Agression- F*** you
Displeasure- What the f*** is going on here
Difficulty- I can't understand this f***ing job
Incompetence- He is a F*** Off
Suspicion- What the f*** are you doing?
Enjoyment- I had a f***ing time
Request- Get the f*** out of here
Hostility- I'm going to knock your f***ing head off
Greeting- How the f*** are you?
Apathy- Who gives a F***
Innovation- Get a bigger f***ing hammer
Surprise- F***, You scared the shit out of me
Anxiety- Today is really f***ed

And it is very healthy too....
If every morning you do it as a transandental meditation
Just when you get up, the first thing
Repeat the mantra F*** you, 5 times
It clears the throat
That's how i keep my throat clear
Enough for today......

The Teacher will not be recognized by the diamonds on his head or by the number of students he has.

Know the Teacher to be the One whose presence gives you Peace and removes all craving, attachment and desire.

The Teacher is one who knows the Truth and can transmit this Truth to a humble one by look, by touch, by thought, or, as Arunachala does, by Silence.

This Silence is the Light that does not move.

The true Teacher has no students, all Being and only Silence speaks.

The perfect Teacher has no teachings because he knows that you are Free already.

That which can be taken away from you is not worth keeping, and that which cannot be taken away from you... why should one be afraid of its being taken away? It cannot be taken away, there is no possibility. You cannot lose your real treasure"

Polygamy for Both, No Marriage

What if Noone get Married?

Looking at the so much artificial problems in the artificial society I have made an attempt to visualize a natural way of living on earth which goes like this.......starting from polygamy.
About Polygamy my view is that both man and woman are polygamy in nature. Actually marriage was started just to suppress the women as the man continue satisfying their polygamy genes by many marriages or with prostitutes. In this way woman was forced to accept the monogamy and she has forgotten her true self.
If you go by the logic and nature then look at the animals. Each time the female chooses her partner for sex and for child... each time male can be different and also male can have different partner each time.
Marriage is just a legal prostitution which support the male hegemony in society....

The society should be like this ...all men and women should be unmarried. They can love anyone...and make sex too as long as they love. Human body and souls are free ...a legal bond cant bind a part of it to anyone. They can satisfy their polygamy nature as men and women fall in love many times in life. If they are in marriage either it will end in divorce or there will be 4 person when they are in bedroom..i.e.. he, she, his lover and her lover and the child produced will be having many psychological problems which will increase if they fight also as they dont love them anymore...its just a marriage bond they are fullfilling.

Hence by marriage many problems of society will go. By marriage will go the Most Crimes against women as they will have more power and more choice, by marriage will go Divorce, with marriage will go many psychological disorders and jobs of many lawyers and doctors, with marriage will go the unnatural and forced monogamy, with marriage will go rapes and prostitution, with marriage will go the forced castism and religion and superstitious thoughts transferred by parents to their children. The children of the people will be the collective responsibility of society and they will learn from many people and choose whatever they want to be.

Teasing will be done by both man as well as women.

Whats your views?

If you love you dont need to Marry, and If you dont love you Should not Marry ! It is as simple as that.

INTRODUCTION:
Why dirty secrets?
Simple, because we never attract towards anything that is sober and decent.
Dirty is attractive, dirty is appealing, and dirty may be dangerous.
There is great appeal for sex and meditation since the beginning of the
universe.
I answered why ‘dirty’.
Now why ‘ten’?
Why ‘ten dirty’ secrets?
Why not twenty or hundred?
I don’t know.
I like ‘ten’.
It seems like ‘Ten Commandments’ of Jesus, that’s why Ten.
Who knows people may know me for centuries for my “Ten Dirty Secrets of
Getting Enlightened”
Who knows?
Anyway,
Meditation is dangerous. Meditation may bring you to the point where there is
nothing good or bad. It may wash out whatsoever you have earned through lots
of hard work, and education. You may find that your securities are in fact
insecurities. And the relationships and love you are clinging right now are in
fact your insecurities and escape form loneliness.
You may lose your identity, and persona.
From centuries meditation is considered as something arduous and sacred. And
that keeps everyone away from meditation. For these people meditation is
going away from society, and to become a monk.
Renounce. Give up.
But it is very coward to run away from the society. Actually society is a test.
Only in this big madhouse your abilities can be test and you can find your
center. Or you may find that there is no center at all!
Otherwise how will you know that you become a Buddha?
Even a Buddha has to come back to society. So why leave society in the first
place?

4
I don’t think it’s essential to apologize for my good English as I am not here to
teach you English.
One more thing that is of course NOT very much essential to mention here, that
this book has no copyright. You can use it, misuse it or claim as your own, I’ll
not mind, because I don’t have mind.
And don’t take me responsible if you lose your original track of Sadhna or what
you may think as Mediation.

5
SECRET ONE: Kill your guru
Kill your guru!
Drop your master.
Yes! That’s right.
This is the biggest lesson one can ever learn. It doesn’t matter how much your
guru is wise or enlightened, his light is not going to help you to become
enlightened. Guru is your ultimate safety but enlightenment is RUNNING FROM
SAFETY.
You are not enlightened as long as you are a follower and dependent. One is
confused and following different gurus. It creates more confusion.
Get clear.
Nobody is going to clean your shit.
You are not going to understand a Buddha, because you are listening to him
through YOUR conditioning, your past experiences, concepts and confusion.
Clarity and order is Meditation.
Do not bother what masters are telling; first look deep within the mess and
chaos you have created. Look into the mind; watch it and you will find clarity
of perception.
That perception which is free from all prejudices and concepts is your real
guru.
Of course in the end you are NOT going to find out ENLIGHTENMENT!
But I don’t want to make you disappoint and upset right now.
Otherwise you are not going to read this book seriously and thoroughly.
Don’t you?
Well…

6
SECREAT TWO: Burn all scriptures
Burn all scriptures!
Burn all books and knowledge!
It is enough reason to burn them all that you are NOT enlightened yet, after
reading all this holy shit since thousands of years.
This borrowed knowledge is the source of your confusion and as long as you are
dependent on this knowledge you will remain dumb ass.
Books and borrowed knowledge is your shelter and safety. You are repeating
and quoting endlessly and shamelessly others. And your so called education is
nothing but repeating others.
Isn’t it?
Now give it a full stop.
You will feel much relax after this.
No more reading holy shit, No more repeating others is only your dirty mantra.
Why fill our minds with what others have been told? It may be holy and scared
but it is not your OWN experience.
It may be good for them, it may be right for them or it may be right for that
time when they lived and died.
And most important thing is that I don’t want you to be crucified just for
quoting Jesus or Socrates. You talk your own shit and then get crucified.
And one more important thing, which I would like to point out here, and also
which you forget in evolution of mankind, that you have got a hundred grams of
flesh which is called BRAIN. It has got network of trillions and zillions of cells,
having their own individual consciousness and infinite correlation.
Many of you may like to write this important fact on your foreheads,
I HAVE GOTTA BRAIN!!!
Isn’t it?
Then use it dude.
It is not a store room for colleting garbage! It can also think.
7
Yes, your brain can think new ideas, and invent something totally new which
can surprise you.
Why waste time in reading, quoting and discussing others?
Write something!
Talk something, original and virgin.
Some holy shit, so that others can read you, so that others can listen to you!
Give some sutra, give some mantra. After all this is a sign of a Buddha. Here
Buddha means not Gautam Buddha but a person having his own tube light.
If you are light unto yourself, means if you are having your own tube light only
then you are a qualified Buddha. Having our own light means USING our own
little shitty brain.
Hmmm?
Is that clear?
Nobody can give that to you, that little sacred, holy … light!
Didn’t you see that little aura around your enlightened master’s face, in
photographs?
Well it’s actually photographer’s trick, but something like that.
Ok, we learned that not a single book or Holy Scripture can give it to you. And
not a single technique can give you intelligence. Intelligence can not be
produced by any method or technique, however cleverly discovered by a
master or guru, a technique of meditation can not liberate you.
A technique of meditation…Opps! I’m already talking on…

8
SECREAT THREE: Throw away that meditation
My dear lazy friend,
Good news for you.
No early morning wake ups!
Yes, throw away that meditation.
What is meditation? Isn’t it continuity of mind?
I am going to meditate for twelve, fifteen years and then one day if that Old
One pleases then I may become enlightened and meantime I’ll remain asshole.
This is our meditation. Isn’t it?
A repetition.
And repetition makes your brain dull and mechanical. We are so dumb,
somebody tells us how to seat, how to breathe, how to watch. We just follow.
Meditation is rebel.
Rebel my friend REBEL,
Otherwise who is going to crucify you?
Who is going to poison you?
Unless you are no more a rebel to society, its pattern and bullshit tradition you
are not a real messiah. You are just a vegetable.
A follower.
Aren’t you?
And they are telling you, meditation is to put your mind aside, going beyond
mind.
Ok then one seating of meditation is enough. Why taking so much time.
Everyday you meditate and put aside your mind for a while and as soon as you
finish your meditation you pick it up again, why?
Drop the mind, and be finished?
Your so called meditation is not real meditation at all; it’s just a trick to
continue fighting with mind to keep it alive.
9
If I’m wrong then stop reading, no point in wasting time.
And if you can not stop reading than I assume that you are convinced with this
point.
Ok, next point,
They say we are going step by step.
Step by step we are going to get free from the mind. But this is the way of
mind to go step by step to be continued and never put an end, and be finished!
If one day in the future you are going to drop your mind, as your theory
promises, then remember that future will never come, because meantime you
will carry the same mind.
Don’t you?
And whenever you will drop the mind it will be always present moment, ok?
Can you sense the logic of this point?
Then why not HERE?
And why not NOW?
And if you are going to drop your mind here and now then no technique is
needed.
Because technique is TIME.
Technique is MIND.
Technique is HOPE.
Hope is FUTURE.
And Future is …MIND.
As long as you are meditating your mind is expecting - something is going to
happen, Nirvana, Samadhi, and that expectation is mind. That mind which was
hankering for money, prestige and sex is now hankering for Nirwana, Moksha
and Samadhi.
Is there any difference?
As long as you want something however sacred it may be, your mind is going to
be continued, and we don’t want to stop search. That is the trick of the mind.
Enlightenment is not an event which is going to happen one day in the future
but it is hidden in the understanding of the tricks and ways of mind.
10
It is NOW! Right now you can look into the mind and confusion and become
free.
Right now you can drop everything you are carrying unnecessary since ages and
be finished. It is not a question of meditation. Unless your eyes become fresh
and innocent how can you see Him?
As long as you are looking trough concepts, theories and beliefs how can you
look into Reality?
This is the real meditation, to drop all that is rubbish. It is to empty and clean
your mind.
Do not find excuses through daily routine of mediation and prayers; just be
finished once and forever!
This is the test of courage and confidence!
And He is ready as soon as you make space for Him
But we are afraid of being finished. We don’t want to drop our stupidities and
miseries because that’s the only property we have got. Because that is the only
our identity of “Who am I?”
Even if suddenly God comes in front of you, you will tell him wait I want to
search you, please not now.
And he comes only when you are empty and clean. That is the only rule.
And if you are really with me then you will find him…

11
SECREAT FOUR: It is happening right now!
Here and now!
Yes you will find it, whatever you may call it, God, Nirvana or Samadhi or
anything, I don’t want to give it a name, and you will find it Here and Now!
God is happening right now!
God is not something static. God is life.
Life is happening right now, life is never in past or future, it’s always here and
now. And mind is always living in future or past, hence no meeting. Nirvana or
Samadhi is here and now. It is not something that happens while you are
seating cross leg and watching your bad breathing.
Please don’t bring in any concepts and theories, just be here and now. If you
are totally here and now then you will notice that there is no thought, there is
no mind. There is no ME. The ME is nothing but the collection of all memories
and hopes. This ME is the collection of thoughts and images. This ME is always
moving in the past and the future. It is never in THIS moment. And as soon as
you are totally Here and Now, this ME is disappeared.
At this point the observer, the observed and the process of observation is ONE.
HOLD!
Your real nature is this silent witnessing.
There is no witness which is the dead past but only “The process of fresh
witnessing”.
It is as if first time you wake up from a deep sleep.
There is no mind; there is no ME (which is collection of past memories) but just
a simple process of witnessing.
Is this enlightenment?
NO!
Why?
Who is going to be enlightened if there is no ME?

12
SECRET FIVE: Witness is NOT you
So this silent process of witnessing is the knower.
And if you look very closely you will see that this witness is NOT you.
It is existence.
It is life.
This is the secret.
It has no beginning and no end.
It doesn’t have any meaning but we can give any meaning to it. It is coming
from nowhere and going to nowhere. And mind can never know it because mind
is just a wave in this vast space which is the knower or observer.
This silent observer is beyond time and beyond all boundaries.
And it doesn’t know about your scriptures and all efforts you are doing to know
it. It has nothing to do with your meditations and temples and all stupidity
going on since the beginning of the universe in the name of religions.
At this point you are not enlightened but you come to understand a very
important truth about yourself that when you are NOT only then IT is. You can
not experience this as long as you are busy with meditation, following masters
or carrying burden of dead scriptures.
It is not something which is going to happen tomorrow or in the future but it is
happening right now. You are not going to become Buddha but you have to live
your Buddha hood.
This can happen anywhere, and this can happen to anyone. Not in future but
right now.
Your efforts and clinging to gurus and books are actually not helped you but
created a false identity which can be just wipe out completely in a flash but
we never allow this to happen because it is a death of ego.
I am a Sanyasi, I am a Sadhak, I am following holy tradition, my master is
greater than yours, peace is difficult, I must suppress sex, I must fight and I
must struggle - all these thoughts are yours. And you can drop them instantly.
It is the mind.
And here comes…

13
SECRET SIX: You can not drop it step by step
You can not drop it step by step.
Yes this is the most serious part of all, its going to shake your ass.
You can never going to drop your mind step by step, because mind is the
function which operates step by step, in TIME.
Actually mind is time. Thought is Time.
Isn’t it?
Thought is always operating in time. Tomorrow is the language of the mind.
And tomorrow never comes. Tomorrow I’m going to drop my mind or after
doing lots of Meditation one day there will be no mind, but how can this will be
possible?
Meantime this mind will be continued.
And who is going to drop this mind?
Isn’t that also mind, which wants to go beyond mind or to drop the mind?
It is not something different entity who is planning to drop the mind. It is the
mind itself fooling you, and of course to your so called Gurus who are inventing
so many techniques and methods to engage your mind forever in holy
entertainments.
So our basic question is:
Who is going to control the thought?
It is thought itself thinking to control the thought. And this is the basis of all
conflict.
The same thought indulging in violence, hatred and bad habits wants to control
all this by creating a false separation, but in fact the controller is the
controlled.
The controller is not something separate from that it wants to control.
So your question may be like this: Ok MG how to get rid of this shitty mind?
Ok friend don’t be so much excited,
I’ll tell you …

14
SECRET SEVEN: Acceptance is death
Accept!
Acceptance is death.
Acceptance is death of mind. Resistance, struggle, fighting, searching,
analyzing are the ways of the mind. Hoping, expecting, dreaming and living in
dead past or future is the very nature of the mind.
Ok!
Let him live there in the ashes of past or future.
The end.
Don’t fight; don’t try to bring it back in the present.
Just leave it.
Just accept. It is there. And it is no more.
Accept whatsoever happening right now in your life. Accept every situation,
every person and everything going in and around you. You don’t want to change
anything; you don’t want to do anything, not even meditation.
Just be.
And you will see that observer and observed are not separate.
Observer is the observed.
The existence is watching itself.
And the ME with its endless search, efforts, knowledge and celibacy is no more
exist.
Only that exist which doesn’t have any name, or shape.
Only space is watching and everything is moving in THAT space which is the
observer.
This silent observer, this space, this silence is the field of infinite potential.
Ultimately we come to know …

15
SECRET EIGHT: Enlightenment is NOT personal
That there is no death as there is no birth.
This silent witnessing is the very nature of the universe; it has no beginning and
no end.
It is never born and it’s never going to die. It’s always there, silently
witnessing. Nothing goes unnoticed. This silent witnessing is non-local.
It is always there.
It is not individual consciousness but universal consciousness.
Enlightenment is NOT personal.
When there is enlightenment there is no YOU. Enlightenment means finishing
your own movie. Then there is no suffering.
The simple definition of enlightenment is ‘the ending of suffering’.
Because if there is no YOU who is going to suffer? And who is going to die? And
who is going to be enlightened?
You are nothing but some universal energies crisscrossing!
Nothing big deal, huh?
Dude YOU do not exist!
Now you may ask what is the next secret..???

16
SECRET NINE: There is nobody inside who is going to be enlightened
Old habit!
Just old habit!
You will never understand, my dumb ass friend I already told you, that YOU
EXIST NOMORE!!! So there is no point in talking about secret nine and ten, and
there is no point in talking about enlightenment as there is nobody who is going
to be enlightened.
Is that enough?
You drop your holy shit because it is a burden, you drop your guru because it is
dependence, and you drop all concepts of spirituality and god because it is not
YOUR EXPERIENCE. You drop your meditation because it gives only hope and
you saw that it gives continuity to the same old mind by repetition.
In short this is the mind. And you drop your mind which was your identity.
This shitty mind was you.
Now it is finished!
Hmmm?
To see false as false is the ending of false.
To see false in your own light, however small it may be is the beginning of
something new. This small light brings you total freedom.
And the freedom has no history. It is ever fresh and totally new.
You may call it enlightenment but there is nobody inside who is going to be
enlightened.
Anyway the last secret:

17
SECRET TEN: Enlightenment is self proclaimed! Live your Buddha hood!
Now don’t waste your time in thinking, analyzing and searching otherwise the
old mind will return back! And you will lose your new born enlightenment, hold
it dude, and hold it fast.
Nobody is going to give you any certificate for that.
Enlightenment is self proclaimed!
Live moment to moment in the present. Because in this moment there is no
mind and you are one with existence. You can experience this oneness only in
THIS moment. God or Life is happening this moment, be with him. Instead of
running your own shitty, flop movie, become part of THAT big super hit movie
which has no beginning and no ending.
Celebrate.
Dance.
Laugh.
Because the Old One is dancing right NOW!
Only when you are happy the ego is not found. If you are constantly rejoicing,
celebrating and laughing then there is no need to find enlightenment and God.
If you are totally enjoying whatsoever you are doing then you are in His
present, and He is present in you.
Live your Buddha hood!
The Old One Loves You.

18
SECRET OF ALL SECRETS:
Do not teach your shit to others!!!
There is already big conflict over what gurus and messiahs had told, so you
please keep quite. Do not shout.
People are already confused, because so many paths and so many concepts
about truth and reality. Now you do not introduce a new one.
Ending is the new beginning…
